Las Vegas Hikes

Red Rock Canyon - National Conservation  Area

(part of the Mojave Desert)

view from one of the parking lots
Forget the casinos, Red Rock Canyon is the best of Vegas. This is a park I always visit when in Las Vegas. Not to be confused with Red Rock Canyon State Park in California, this park is just a twenty minute (17 miles) drive north of 'The Strip', It takes the form of a beautiful, circular drive through the most fantastic colorful rock formations in the area.  Get out of the car, pull on some hiking boots and a couple of poles, and spend a couple of days, or afternoons, unwinding from all of the money you lost at the gaming tables.  For a brief visit, expect to take at least four hours.

Over 1 million people visit this park every year, from April through October, the warmer months.  Most people simply cruise the ring road and parking lots, and walk a few short trails, but adventure lies in the longer walks, and for the really adventurous, rock climbing. Off the circular park route, there are numerous parking lots and trails (13 miles of them)  that take you into the hills surrounding the canyon.  They are very much interconnected,  so some caution is required when deciding which fork to take when you reach a junction.  Most trails start low and go upwards, so expect that coming back down a trail is going to be less 'slog', but harder on your knees.  If you like easy walks, many trails parallel the road and don't have much of an incline.  If you go up any trail, take water and a hat...

Bear in mind, when visiting Red Rock, that weather is tremendously different depending upon season.  Summers are scorching hot, requiring lots of water and appropriate head gear, while winters are cool, sometimes with snow on top.  Temperatures are about 7 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than  in Las Vegas, due to the altitude. These pictures were taken in March, when the weather was very nice.
If you are a novice climber, you will also find many others scaling the canyon walls who will inspire you to the same goals.

For your viewing enjoyment

Red Rock has all the typical Mojave flaura and fauna.  Remember there are 'critters' there too, but you are unlikely to see very much of them.
